Sean’s Path to Choosing Medicine
While studying in high school, I had already decided my future profession. But having arrived at Rice University, my dream of becoming a doctor quickly dissipated. In freshman and sophomore year, I looked everywhere for a profession that was in my mind both noble and interesting. I talked to career counselors at Rice, friends, professors, and even my boss about their personal process of choosing their profession. In the end, I returned to the path towards becoming a doctor.
The reason I chose medicine is not only for the doctor salary. Biology has always attracted my interest. I also think that I have had a pretty fortunate life, and so giving back to the community in the future is only right. But the biggest reason why I want to study medicine is to listen to patient perspective and stories. I prescribe to the saying “Of three people, one is my master”, and so it is my goal as a doctor to continuously investigate new treatment methods and learn compassion and humanity through patient care.
Being a doctor not only requires taking care of patients, but also requires cooperating and communicating with nurses, hospital directors, lawyers, and family members of patients. I do not necessarily enjoy the politics of the medical field, but I am willing to experience and endure all the troubles and pains of being a doctor for the sake of my patients.
讀高中的時候我已經開始計畫我將來的職業. 但到了萊斯大學以後, 我當醫生的願望很快地消失. 大一和大二的那兩年我就到處找野鴿我認為又高尚又對我有興趣的職業. 我有跟萊斯大學的職業顧問, 朋友, 教授, 甚至老闆談他們選擇職業的過程. 最後我還是回到學醫的道路.
我學醫的決定不光是因為醫生的薪水. 生物學一直都很吸引我的興趣. 我也認為我一生都蠻幸福的, 所以將來服務社會也是應該的. 但我想學醫最大的原因就是去聆聽病人的故事和想法. 我很篤信 『三人行必有我師』, 所以能夠當醫生而不斷的研究新醫療知識和通過關心病人學到同情和作人的經歷是我的目標.
當醫生不但要懂得照顧病人, 還要懂得跟護士, 醫院經理,律師, 和病人的家人溝通和合作. 我並不喜歡醫療識業裡包含的政治,但為了我的病人我願意體驗和忍受當醫生各各方面的矛盾和痛苦.
